EQUILIBRIUM is about two guys who have awesome superpowers and are best friends. They kind of pussyfoot around about how much they mean to each other and how hot they think the other one is. Then one day some bad shit happens and they realize that pussyfooting is dumb, because not pussyfooting could mean getting laid -- also, falling in love and being happy forever and ever, if they play their cards right. And survive the bad shit.

Then it really hits the fan and someone almost dies and a bunch of shit catches on fire.

No, that is not the official blurb. Please see below for that.

Please consider buying this book, because I totally wrote it, and it's cute and hot and fun and I honestly think it's an entertaining way to spend your evening, and still waaaaay cheaper than a movie ticket!

Click here for the proper blurb, excerpts, character stats, and cover stuff

Click here to go straight to the buying part

Thanks y'all. And thanks to John and Jen for helping me write it, and Tara for, uh, being one of the characters sorta.

Please stop loving me (I am none of these things) [Jul. 1st, 2010|06:13 pm]

Please check out my-- er, over Henry-Jamesified historical dark fiction short, The Horologist at this quarter's New Bedlam Project, y'all!

Thanks to John for the loads of help on it!

If you like it too, feel free to make me feel cool by posting a comment there at the mag or over at my author blog entry on the subject. You know. I mean, just-- if you wanted. Right.

Seriously though, I had a lot of fun writing it. And not just because I was on a train to see Reenie/The Manics and/or drinking coffee listening to random Columbia grad students argue while hammering out the first draft. (Though that helped, admittedly.)

Also, this is my husband's favorite story of mine. Random fun fact, right? Er, yeah.

The mini-vacation/visit from the frozen north-types was relaxing and just the thing for me. I hope they enjoyed it, because it certainly staved off that initial "Oh god I just finished a book and now it's quiet and lonely in my head" feeling. Though it did creep in now and then, it hardly had time-- and that was amazing.

Plus, we just had fun.

Caught up with most business-stuff. Other stuff as the day progresses.

Now I plan on devoting myself to video games for the next few days almost non-stop.

I signed my Belfire contract today, so I put up The Official Announcement on the author blog. Yay!

I just realized that The Horologist is the 10th story I've sold. Not bad, that!

Right, just wanted to note that here for posterity. Back to work!

ETA: I did not in fact get back to work. But icons have now reached the halfway point! 150 out of 300!

Since I've already pimped this everywhere else in the world, allow me to draw your attention to my little flash piece:

Cigarettes In Hell, up today at Everyday Weirdness.

In case you don't know me very well, no this is not a political statement. I just like annoyed demons. The entire plot of my little novella Oubliette revolves around one, even.

If you take the sixty seconds to read it, I really hope you're amused-- or I've wasted your time and apologize! For extra ego points, you could comment on my author blog and make me look cool. If you wanted.

Holy fuck Johnny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightley?

Yes please. I'll take 3.

(Hell, I didn't even hate Emma in that version!)

ETA: Yes, Amazon is obviously run by a cabal of temper-tantrum throwing three year olds. I get that. They lost because they are insane corporate bastards who aren't even good at being corporate bastards-- which just leaves them with insanity. Way to lose authors, readers, and sympathy in general, fucktards.

But Macmillan, news flash. I will never pay over $10 for a fucking e-book. In fact, I wouldn't even pay that much, because I know how much that shit costs to make, and I know how little of it goes to an author. So fuck off.

Why Amazon couldn't just let them find out for themselves, I dunno. But that's the least mystifying of everything they did this weekend, let's face it.

Seriously though, why must publishing make the SAME EXACT FUCKING MISTAKES the RIAA and MPAA already made before they figure this shit out?

Post of Shame [Jan. 12th, 2010|02:00 am]
[Tags|, , ]

This is embarrassing but... Mark nominated my story in Grant's Pass, Boudha, for the P&E poll. I didn't know, but he says it's his favorite, along with Carole Johnstone's. (Pete Kempshall's was mine, but I don't see it on there. Oooh I could write it in!) Well no, THAT's not embarrassing, but this post is.

Anyhow, it's over Jan 14 at midnight. So, um, if you wouldn't mind, just so I don't feel like a total loser, would you, er, vote for me?

I'm not in last place just now, so I don't have to cry-- if you cannot in good conscience cast your vote for me, I understand. But a lot of you have read it so, er, you know.

I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars [Mar. 4th, 2009|01:01 am]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Music |Mendelssohn - Piano Concerto in E minor]

I got my final proof of Boudha today-- which is the story I have in Grants Pass, in case I haven't yammered about it enough yet.

Man, it looks so good. Not the writing obviously, but the layout is super hot.

The problem is of course that I wrote it months ago-- lots of months ago-- so I'd really weed out a lot of those crappy sentences right now. :/ I wonder if the learning curve ever slows down so stuff I edited like 3 months ago might still look decent to me some day. Oh dear.

If I gotta have a problem it's a good one to have. I think the day I open up a file I wrote three months ago and am NOT horrified, I'm going to have to take a writing class or something. It'd scare the fuck out of me.

Anyhow working on getting Sig's first scene sorted out right now, since I just went over the proof and have been extremely pleased with Amanda's typesetting skillz. And listening to--

Well you know.

Also, Supernatural update: Balaji watched the first three tonight. He's on Team Sam. In retrospect, I should've called that.

'cause now we have the guts to complain [Feb. 18th, 2009|02:14 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

So in happy, non-family related news: I forgot to mention that my copies of Voices arrived last week. I got the Aussie print in the end, though everyone else in the States has the UK edition. They're only different in the price on the back, of course! So if I owed you one (and there are only two of you), it's in the mail as of yesterday. If it doesn't turn up in two weeks max, let me know. Because I was feeling crappy yesterday Balaji volunteered to mail them for me, and god knows if he could read my writing.

Here's a picture of it for posterity, with the star-pen thing of awesome Becca gave me when I sold it-- which I think I posted back then but anyhow. (It has the name of the story and the year on it!)

cut because I care )

Yes, my desk is a mess, thank you for asking.

Anyhow this book is old news, I know, but it looks nice, dammit. And seeing as I have another story coming up from them in a few (count them!) five months, and it looks like another one after that, assuming I can deliver on this sweet commission, that's good to see! Not that I expected anything less, of course. Just saying. Pretty.

Now I can read it! (Well, as soon as I can put down Vanity Fair. Which won't be until it's done, I can tell you.)

First Voices review online! I'm unpolished, but interesting. Dude, that's pretty good for a first time!

Now if my books would just arrive from Australia, I could see if I agree with the rest of it. In theory, they're on the way (or they'd better be since I paid just before I left India!)

Gah, the excitement!!!

I just got an email from the totally badass Arkham Tales. They want to buy my story, The Dubious Magic of Elliot Prince (or Cemet'ry Gates).

Fuck. Yes.

Meghan and Jen, I owe you big time for the edits and advice. So does Tim. Elliot, on the other hand... well, you know. Man, I actually kind of like this story too.

Squee, dude. Major squee. I wonder how many you have to sell before it stops making your heart beat so fast you feel like you're going to pass out.

[Current Music |Anthony Bordain is on TV...]

So I'm a day late, but I've had company, so happy new year, y'all! My dad looked at me last night while we were watching the College Football extravaganza (he's a big Penn State fan since, you know, he grew up in PA, but he also watches anything football that's on at any time. Ever. Seriously, it's weird as hell.), "It doesn't feel any different."

No, it never does, but we have to get used to the idea that it's 2009. Annoying when I write out the rent check.

In case anyone is wondering, this is, of course, my writing journal. No matter what other shit I rant about, it's really not the point of this thing being here. If it were, I'd have lost interest in IJ a long time ago, since reality never does much for me. I usually f-lock these writing entries though-- my endless lists and whatever. But since this is sort of the year end wrap-up of Everything I Did, I'm just gonna leave it unlocked. My friends who just stop by and don't use OpenID or anything (as in, the blogger/LJ people who stop by to say hi sometimes) can either look at it or not, but if you glance through it'll tell you the kinds of shit I do every day like way more accurately. (Also: Hi!)

The rest of you will just sigh and say "here she goes again..."

First up: The Resolution. Sort of discussed this on ye olde author blog, but I'm not going to explain why I talk about my characters like they're real anymore. I feel like I'm making excuses. You know why I do it, don't pretend you don't. And if you really don't, that's cool, you probably don't care anyhow.

That said, I'm now going to discuss things that went on this year, for comparison with next year, since I'm crazy like that. This is sort of for my own records and motivation, and I'm doing it today because it's the New Year. Nano felt more like the turnover writing-wise actually, but what the fuck, I figure. It's 8.30am and I'm actually awake. And I can't resist a chance to make a list.

That means it's time for a list of crap I did this year!

Stuff I Did )

So in conclusion, as accomplishments this year go, it's fair to say I've made some important steps. I've proven to myself that I can write well enough to make people take a second look at giant novel projects. I've learned more about pacing, though I'm far from perfecting. I've learned that people will in fact pay me for this-- if not quite a professional rate, yet. But I'm actually confident that I'll get there some day. might take me a few years, but I'm good with that.

And now the obligatory second part. The stuff I want to do.

Up Next... )

And god knows what else, but those are my guesses. It'll be amusing to see how much of it actually goes this way-- especially since we'll be house-shopping and other weird shit this year. Hmmm!

Okay this is a novel in itself. I'll stop now. Just... the lists! They call to me!

there is no true love, just a finely tuned jealousy [Nov. 12th, 2008|01:16 am]
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

A non f-locked update! Not a lot of those this week since I'm Nano obsessing, and pretty much nothing else goes on when I'm drafting. Well, nothing goes on ever. But still. In random news:

Musical rant of the day:

I was pretty proud of my tracklisting for my Nano novel not having any Manic Street Preachers songs on it-- I think that must be a first.

Then I was writing this one really winding-down bit today, and listened to them all day long, and realized that was just wishful thinking. Then I found a video on you tube of Life Becoming a Landslide and tried to laugh at how crappy it was (random Japanese girls singing along, Richey mouthing the words and looking like he has no idea how to play his guitar-- which according to Nicky he did not). Instead I just ended up fangirling to myself, thinking that they look really young and silly, Nicky Wire is really godly in the nerdiest possible way, and James Dean Bradfield could sing me Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and I'd be at rapt attention the entire time because dude.

(Richey is 4 Real and Sean never opens his mouth, but we can take those for granted.)

Sometimes I think they're the best band ever. Definitely the best band that has been in existence (in any relevant way) since I've been around and listening to music-- though I missed their earliest years. Seeing as I was 12 when they started, and all. So I updated my profile page with the Culture Slut picture, so the title of this journal might make a little more sense, while I was in the mood.

And I've still never seen them :/ I'm going to have to align my eventual visit to the UK with a tour of theirs, obviously.

Today, my Nano word count hit the 72% mark. It's coming along swimmingly, thanks!

Tonight I obsessively edited a short story that I like, but have no idea where to send. I've managed to place four stories in the past couple of months, largely thanks to [info]kalenodonnell tempting me to take the plunge and look at duotrope.com. So I'd like to take this opportunity to urge everyone to go there and find a place for their babies, or ideas for some. Poetry-Novel length, it can find a home there. (Or on Ralan.com, which I confess to not using very much because it's ugly by comparison. I'm such a shallow cunt like that.)

I've been hoping to place some stuff with some online zines in the next few months. I like the visibility, and the fact that I don't have to try and convince my friends to drop $15 on something just because my story is in it. That's cool once, but after that it's a bit silly, isn't it? So wish me luck on that new venture-- only just begun with a submission (that was rejected!) a week and a half ago.

My mom just bought a bright red Pontiac V6. She's hilarious and awesome.

My brother will have his first day as a substitute teacher in Brooke County tomorrow morning. As the band director to my dad's choir director.

Song of Ice and Fire fans (like ME!!), winter is (finally) coming to HBO.

Fuck yeah!!

In that spirit, [info]etcetera_cat posted this awesome link to hilariously photoshopped fantasy/skiffy bookcovers from Mighty God King over in [info]cat_mcdougall's journal. Possibly NSFW due to swearing in large print, but my god. Everyone I know will find these amazing.

Check the bottom of the page for links to the second and third editions, which are no less hilarious.

Many of them almost made me hurt, I laughed so hard. Knights Who Say Fuck ftw!

[Current Music |The Fratellis - Flathead]

Hey, I wonder how many times I said "fuck" in the last post.

God. Tired and drunk means I REALLY can't stop with that. Says Ms. I Wanna Write For A Living.

So today I did manage to go through the edits from the Harvest Hill crew and sort them out-- always a cool process after a few months of pulling your hair out over the stupid mistakes and quirks you catch two months after submitting. SUCH a relief to see line edits incorporated. My god.

And we got the cat back.

And I still don't know what to do with Izzy. But all this music has me inspired, so I'm a bit sad I can't use my brain much today. Might go and re-read some stuff, but that'd require listening to something other than the Fratellis-- something that won't make me want to sing.

ETA 3.48pm: Oh fuck me, my story is first!!!!

Ugh my stomach hurts. Why did I have to go and write about the American Revolution?! WHY?!

Jump back!

Not sure when it's coming out or which one it'll be in (it's a new market, gonna publish three times a year), but hey. Fucking sweet, my Lovecraft Attempt met with success!

[Current Music |Paul FUCKING Weller - Wild Wood]

Just got an email from the startlingly talented Mike Stone to point out this post on Mark Deniz's LJ. Mark's the owner of Morrigan Books and an all around swell dude, was a real prince about me being a first timer and all.

This post scares the fuck out of me. In a really good way. Shit man, I suddenly realized that people will SEE it, people who PAID for it. Lots of them, apparently. Fucking hope I don't disappoint.

Thank god I kinda liked that story, or I'd be shitting my pants right now. Instead my knees just keep knocking together.

I'm off tomorrow to V Fest. Finally, I don't have to be jealous of the Brits for their goddamn festival season. (Well no, I still am, but this will do.) Needless to say you will find me at the "TD Music Stage" on Saturday ('til I'm dragged away to see the Foo Fighters, who will probably be really good) and the "Virgin Mobile Stage" on Sunday. (I'll be the one going, "Paul fucking Weller!!" every five seconds. Unless I get enough beer. In which case I'll be fine.) I'm through the fucking roof.

My best friend since first grade, Tara, and her husband Matt are coming with us, so we're off to Pittsburgh to pick them up tomorrow and see their new house, then heading off toward the Great White North (and not even going halfway there!) Friday. [info]dejenerate has kindly offered to put up with me and mine for at LEAST one evening and hit up some cool shit in Toronto.

Not to jinx anything, but man. I'm rolling.

See y'all when I get back. I'll be fucking smug. Just a warning.

[Tags|, , , , , , ]

Man. Voices-- that'd be the book with my first ever published story in it, is now up for pre-order. I squealed about it on the site, so if you wanna make me look popular, comment there. If not... just...

Speaking of voices, my mother is quite possibly the only human being I know who ISN'T a writer who I can speak quite plainly to of head people who will say, "Oh yeah, you gotta really watch them sometimes."

Of course, this is because my mother is crazy. But we love her for it, not in spite of it.

And in the last of my Labor Day Weekend news, Jesus H Christ, I love Dexter.

I'm going to try and unwind tonight and pick back up tomorrow, but weekends in WV usually take some time for recovery. Let's just see.
